Artificial grass took hold in Moroccan gardens, terraces and sports grounds for a straightforward reason: it holds up in a climate where water is expensive and the sun is unforgiving. This guide covers what actually determines whether a surface lasts, written for buyers specifying from abroad as well as locally.
What artificial grass is made of
Three components decide quality. The fibres are monofilament polyethylene, textured or curled, which give the surface its look and feel. The backing is a latex or polyurethane carrier that anchors the fibres and holds tension over time. The infill, silica sand and sometimes SBR granules or cork, stabilises the mat, absorbs impact and keeps the blades upright.
A thin backing tears at cut edges and lifts over time. A reinforced backing holds tension and keeps seams closed. This is the component buyers most often overlook and the one that decides whether the surface is still flat in year five.
Pile height and density
Pile height is a use decision, not a quality one. Short pile for high-traffic and sports surfaces, medium for gardens, long for decorative areas that see little footfall. Density matters more than height: a dense short pile outlasts a sparse long one and recovers its shape far better.
The climate constraint
Ultraviolet exposure is the limiting factor in Morocco, and coastal sites add salt air. UV-stabilised fibre is not a premium option here, it is the baseline. Ask for the specification rather than the description.
Installation
Most failures are groundwork failures, not product failures. On soil this means excavation and a draining sub-base; on a terrace the water must still reach the existing outlets. Drainage is a property of the whole build-up, not just the perforated backing.

Expect 8 to 15 years depending on fibre quality, exposure and maintenance.
